How Long Does a Kitchen Renovation Take in Perth?

What a premium renovation actually involves

By the team at Renovate Kitchens & Interiors · Subiaco, Perth

A full kitchen renovation in Perth typically takes 8 to 16 weeks from first consultation to handover. Around 2 to 5 weeks of that is design and selections, 4 to 8 weeks is cabinetry manufacture and benchtop fabrication running behind the scenes, and 2 to 4 weeks is the on-site build itself.

The part most homeowners underestimate is that the majority of a bespoke kitchen renovation happens before anyone arrives to remove your old kitchen. A custom kitchen is drawn, engineered and manufactured to your home before installation begins, which is precisely why the finished result fits properly and why the timeline looks different to a flat pack refit.

Renovate Kitchens & Interiors has been designing and building bespoke kitchens across Perth for more than 30 years. Below is what each stage actually involves, how long it genuinely takes, and the specific things that push a Perth kitchen renovation timeline out.

The Short Answer

  • Simple refit (same layout, replacement cabinetry and benchtops): 6 to 9 weeks end to end.
  • Full custom kitchen (new layout, bespoke cabinetry, stone or porcelain benchtops, integrated appliances): 10 to 16 weeks end to end.
  • Kitchen plus adjoining spaces (butler’s pantry, laundry or living area included, or structural changes): 16 to 24 weeks end to end.

On-site disruption is much shorter than the total. For most Renovate projects the kitchen itself is out of action for 2 to 4 weeks, not the full project length.

Typical Renovate project range
$50,000 to $150,000

Where a project sits inside that range comes down to cabinetry scope, benchtop and finish selection, the appliance package, and whether any structural work is involved.

Stage by Stage: Where the Time Actually Goes

Stage 1: Reimagined, the initial consultation (1 to 2 weeks)

The first stage is a conversation about how you actually use your kitchen, followed by a site measure. This is where the brief is set: how you cook, how many people use the space at once, what frustrates you about the current layout, and what the kitchen needs to do in five years’ time.

Booking availability is usually what determines this stage rather than the work itself. Once the consultation happens, the measure and concept direction follow quickly. You can read more about how the four stages fit together on our Our Process page.

Stage 2: Designed, drawings and selections (2 to 4 weeks)

This is the stage that separates a bespoke kitchen from an off-the-shelf one, and the stage clients most often want to move faster than they should. Layout is resolved, cabinetry is drawn to the millimetre, and every material is selected: door finishes, benchtop material, hardware, splashback, sink and tapware, and the appliance package.

Selections are the usual bottleneck. A single undecided benchtop choice holds up fabrication, which holds up install. Clients who visit our Subiaco showroom early and make decisions in one or two focused sessions consistently finish faster than those deciding piece by piece over email. If you are weighing up materials, our guide to the best countertop materials for your kitchen renovation covers the practical differences.

Stage 3: Manufacture and fabrication (4 to 8 weeks, mostly off site)

Once the design is signed off, cabinetry goes into production and benchtop material is ordered. This runs in the background while you continue using your existing kitchen, which is why the on-site disruption window is far shorter than the total project length.

Typical lead times in Perth:

  • Custom cabinetry: 3 to 6 weeks depending on finish and complexity. Painted two-pack doors take longer than laminate or melamine.
  • Benchtops: 2 to 4 weeks from template to install. Templating cannot happen until cabinetry is physically in place, so this sits inside the build stage, not before it.
  • Imported European appliances: 2 to 12 weeks. This is the single most common cause of a delayed handover, and the easiest to avoid by ordering early.

Bespoke cabinetry is built to your exact layout rather than assembled from standard modular sizes, which is what drives both the lead time and the fit. Our
custom cabinetry solutions guide explains what that involves in practice.

Stage 4: Built, the on-site phase (2 to 4 weeks)

This is the part homeowners picture when they think about a renovation, and it is the shortest stage. A typical sequence:

  • Days 1 to 2: demolition and removal of the existing kitchen.
  • Days 2 to 5: rough-in for plumbing and electrical, plus any structural work.
  • Week 2: cabinetry installation, then benchtop templating once carcasses are set.
  • Week 3: benchtop installation, splashback, appliance fit-off, plumbing and electrical fit-off.
  • Week 4: painting, final trades, detailing and clean.

The gap between cabinetry install and benchtop install is unavoidable. Stone and porcelain benchtops are templated to the cabinetry as built, not to the drawing, which is the only way to get a precise fit on a custom kitchen. Expect roughly 7 to 10 days between those two visits.

Stage 5: Perfected, final refinement and handover (3 to 7 days)

The final stage is refinement against our own standards: door and drawer alignment, finish inspection, appliance testing, and a walkthrough. Anything not right is corrected before handover rather than after. Because design, cabinetry and construction are managed in-house, there is one accountable team resolving those items rather than three contractors pointing at each other.

What Actually Causes Delays in Perth

Timelines slip for a small number of predictable reasons. Knowing them in advance is the best protection against them.

  • Late selections. The most common cause by a wide margin. Every week a benchtop or door finish stays undecided is a week added to the back end.
  • Appliance lead times. Integrated European appliances can carry long import windows. Ordering at design sign-off rather than before install removes this risk entirely.
  • Structural changes. Removing a wall to open a kitchen into a living space requires engineering assessment if the wall is load bearing, and that adds weeks before demolition can start.
  • Trade availability. Perth plumbers, electricians and gas fitters commonly carry 1 to 3 week wait times, and the spring period from September to November is the busiest window of the year.
  • Surprises behind the old kitchen. Older Perth homes regularly hide asbestos sheeting, non-compliant wiring or damaged plumbing behind cabinetry. None of it is visible until demolition.

A sensible plan carries a 10 to 15 percent time contingency. A 12 week project quoted honestly is better than an 8 week project that finishes in 14.

Can You Live at Home During a Kitchen Renovation?

Yes, and most Renovate clients do. Because manufacture happens off site, your existing kitchen stays usable until demolition day. The genuinely difficult window is the 2 to 4 weeks of on-site work when you have no sink, no cooktop and no dishwasher.

Clients who manage it best set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere in the house before demolition: a bar fridge, microwave, kettle and air fryer, with the nearest bathroom sink for washing up. Planning that in the week before demolition rather than the day it starts makes a considerable difference to how the month feels.

Why a Bespoke Kitchen Takes Longer Than a Flat Pack Refit

A flat pack kitchen can be installed in under a week because the cabinetry already exists in standard sizes. A bespoke kitchen does not exist until it is drawn and built for your home specifically.

That difference is where the extra weeks go: design resolution, cabinetry manufactured to your exact dimensions, benchtops templated to the installed cabinetry, and appliances selected to suit the design rather than fitted into whatever gap remains. It is the same reason the two approaches sit at different price points, which we cover in detail in our guide to kitchen renovation cost in Perth. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a kitchen renovation take in Perth?

A full kitchen renovation in Perth typically takes 8 to 16 weeks from first consultation to handover. A simple refit in the same layout is closer to 6 to 9 weeks, while a fully bespoke kitchen with a new layout and custom cabinetry generally runs 10 to 16 weeks. The on-site portion, when the kitchen is unusable, is usually 2 to 4 weeks.

How long is the kitchen actually out of action?

Between 2 and 4 weeks for most projects. Cabinetry manufacture and benchtop ordering happen off site while your existing kitchen remains in use, so the disruption window is much shorter than the total project timeline.

What is the longest part of a kitchen renovation?

Cabinetry manufacture, at 3 to 6 weeks, is usually the longest single stage. It runs off site, so it does not disrupt the household, but it cannot start until design and selections are finalised. Late selections are therefore the most common cause of an extended timeline.

Why is there a gap between cabinetry and benchtop installation?

Stone and porcelain benchtops are templated to the cabinetry after it is physically installed, not from the drawings. This is the only way to achieve a precise fit on a custom kitchen. Expect roughly 7 to 10 days between cabinetry install and benchtop install.

Do I need council approval for a kitchen renovation in Perth?

A like-for-like kitchen replacement generally does not require a building permit. Approval is typically needed where structural work is involved, such as removing or altering a load bearing wall, or where significant plumbing or drainage relocation occurs. Because requirements vary between local governments, we confirm what your specific project needs during the design stage rather than leaving it to chance.

When is the best time of year to renovate a kitchen in Perth?

Late summer through to early winter generally moves fastest, because trade availability is better. Spring, from September to November, is the busiest renovation period in Perth and lead times for plumbers, electricians and gas fitters stretch accordingly. If your timing is flexible, starting design in winter positions your build ahead of the spring rush.

Plan Your Kitchen Renovation Timeline

Every kitchen is different, and the only way to get an accurate timeline for yours is to scope it properly. Renovate Kitchens & Interiors manages design, cabinetry and construction in-house across all four stages, which is what keeps projects moving without the handover gaps that come from coordinating separate suppliers.
